If you try opening one up, you'll find that it is just
a simple text file (for the most part), where each
line represents a different contact, in the following
formatting:

    <group name>;<uin>;<nickname>;

The only trick is that each line is terminated with a
CRCRLF sequence (0x0D 0x0D 0x0A) instead of the
standard CRLF (0x0D 0x0A), or just a CR (0x0D), or
just a LF (0x0A).
