"The driving concern of Internet policy debates in the latter part of the
1990s has been how to tame the Internet animal. Free and informal exchange
of
information worked fine in the childhood of the Internet, but as the
Internet grew up it also became commercial. The Information Law Institute
at New York University School of Law arranged a conference on A Free
Information Ecology in the Digital Environment between March 31, 2000 to
April 2, 2000 in New York at NYU School of Law. The conference addressed a
broad range of issues, to name a few: what are the normative implications
of the existence of a free information ecology in the digitally networked
environment, how sustainable is this free information ecology as a matter
of economic theory and what are the policy implications of our normative
and positive conclusions of a free information ecology. The first day free
software was the main issue. The second day looked more specifically at
various instances of free information production, with panels on, for
example, the academic system, the nonprofit world, on on free music and
cultural exchange. The third day considered the implications and importance
to democratic valued of both commercial and free exchange of information."
